Why most training doesn't transfer

Most group classes teach handlers to cue behaviors in a controlled setting. The dog learns to perform in the training hall. The real environment — the front door, the trail, the vet lobby — is a different world with different distractions, different stress levels, and different handler energy.

Transfer fails because it was never built in.

How this program is structured differently

Assessment first. Before any protocol, I need behavioral history, drive observation, and an honest read of what has been tried. That's the 90-minute assessment — it's not optional for rehab or service dog work.

In-environment training. Sessions happen where the behavior actually needs to occur: your home, your neighborhood, public spaces. Not a padded room.

Handler coaching is half the work. A dog that performs beautifully with a trainer and reverts at home has an untrained handler, not a trained dog. Every session includes explicit coaching on timing, body language, and what to practice between sessions.

Written session notes. After every session you get notes: what we worked on, what the dog showed, what to practice, and what to expect next session. No guessing.

What I work with

• Positive reinforcement as the foundation
• Marker training (clicker or verbal)
• Drive-based engagement for sport and service work
• Behavior modification protocols for threshold and reactivity cases

I adapt method to the dog. I don't apply a single philosophy to every animal.

What I don't do

I don't use suppression tools as a first line. I don't promise results I can't control. I don't take cases I can't help — if your dog needs something outside my scope, I'll tell you and refer you to someone who can.
